STENDHAL

“Nothing in the world can be compared to the interior of St. Peter’s.”

STENDHAL

“Nothing in the world can be compared to the interior of St. Peter’s.”

ADRIANO GIANNINI LEADS US INTO THE FOUR BASILICAS BY INTERPRETING EXCERPTS FROM STENDHAL’S ‘WALKS IN ROME’

The common narrative thread is based on a few excerpts from “Walks in Rome” by Stendhal (1783-1842), the famous French writer who in the early nineteenth century visited the four churches during his Grand Tour in Italy. A traveller for about a third of his life, Stendhal elected Italy as his primary destination and also became witness to the terrible fire in 1823 that destroyed much of St. Paul Outside the Walls. The Stendhal excerpts are interpreted by Adriano Giannini, and prepare the spectator emotionally to experience the old artistic world of the four impressive buildings through the eyes of this cultured traveller of the early 1800s. In the background the organ of St. John Lateran, one of the oldest in the world, is played exclusively for the film.

EXCLUSIVE FEATURES

EXCLUSIVE FEATURES

ORIGINAL VIEWPOINTS AND INACCESIBLE PLACES UNVEILED FOR THE FIRST TIME IN THE PRECIOUS FRAME OF THE ETERNAL CITY.

The most advanced and modern technology and a cutting edge film set made it possible to create unique shots and show art works and details that are not easily observable by tourists. Michelangelo’s Pietà is filmed for the first time on the other side of the glass case, thus making it visible without reflections and showing viewpoints that have been hidden from the public until now. The inscriptions on the tomb of St. Peter left by pilgrims, the dome designed by Michelangelo and shot from on high and at close range and the basilicas filmed for the occasion behind closed doors are just some of the exclusive content of this production. The film is enriched by three-dimensional models of the graphic reconstructions based on the original projects, some of which are kept in the Vatican Library.
